Eating and drinking, the nutrients we need

WE Modern Humans can live about 7 days without food and 2 days without fluids. We will have to regularly ingest the right nutrients to stay healthy.

Which nutrients does our body need?
There are about 50 nutrients of which we know that they are needed for all life processes. These include proteins (amino acids), fats, carbohydrates (starch and sugars) and a large number of vitamins and minerals.

Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are calledย macronutrients. Vitamins, minerals and trace elements are called micronutrients.ย These nutrients play an important role in many physiological functions required for the life processes of man, such as building and repairing the body, providing energy and managing all the processes that take place in the body.

Depending on our surroundings, we will have to feed ourselves with the food thatโ€™s available. For some, having access to plenty of food is a sure thing. For others itโ€™s not that easy to get a hold of food and it can be even more difficult to findย varied and healthy foodย options.

Human beings areย omnivorous and can consume a wide variety of plant-based and animal products. There are nations where the food mainly consists of meat, while others limit themselves to vegetables, fruit, nuts, etc. Most people eat meat at well as plant-based products. Most food is prepared by cooking it. Cooked food is easier to digest than raw food. Thatโ€™s why most of the products we choose to eat are suitable for cooking.

    Water
Fluids are โ€“ together with oxygen โ€“ the most important for every human being to survive and stay alive. Therefore we need to regularly consume fluids. For adults itโ€™s recommended to consume 1.5-2 liter of fluids a day. How much fluids someone exactly needs depends on age, temperature, physical efforts, consumed food and oneโ€™s health. For example breastfeeding women need more fluids than in general is prescribed. However, medical negligence, such as improper care in hydration-related treatments, can lead to severe consequences.

    What does that mean?
Humans have a body that needs a balanced and varied diet. Not everyone in the world has the opportunity to consume a variety of foods. Besides, there are also places on this earth where people are suffering from a major lack of water.

    Imagine
A world where everybody has access to sufficient, varied food and drinkable fluids. A world where food and water are more equally shared.

    How can you improve yourself?
Make sure your diet is asย varied as possible everyday. In addition to proper diet,ย a variety products may also help improve your health and overall well-being.

Does the food in the region where you live lack in certain nutrients or fluids? Take the time to find out which nutrients or fluids these exactly are and if thereโ€™s a possibility to get a hold of them anyway.

    Urgent Solutions for Urgent Times

โ€œNations United โ€“ Urgent Solutions for Urgent Timesโ€ sets out what must be done to tackle the worldโ€™s biggest issues, from COVID-19 to poverty, inequality, gender discrimination, climate change, justice and human rights. The broadcast will also mark the UNโ€™s 75th anniversary, as well as the 5th anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals.

โ€œToday, as we mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, and the fifth anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals, we feel the weight of history on our shoulders. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how fragile our world and how vulnerable our people are. A microscopic virus has brought us to our knees. That fragility should make us humble and drive us to solidarity as we rebuild the world in a better way.โ€Antรณnio Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations

โ€œThe way we must exit the pandemic is the same way we must exit the devastating crises of extreme poverty, inequality and climate change โ€“ by working together, nations united, inspired by solutions in which we can all play a part. I hope people will watch this film โ€“ from leaders to citizens โ€“ and think about what more they can individually and collectively do in the fight for a better world for everyone, everywhere.โ€Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary General, United Nations

โ€œNobody could have anticipated the crisis and uncertainty that weโ€™re living in, but also the immense appetite and opportunity for change that COVID-19 has provided. Through Nations United, we want to tell the story of how we will use the moment to radically transform our world for the better and set out the solutions that will bring about real global change.โ€Richard Curtis, writer, film director and UN Sustainable Goals Advocate

โ€œIn the midst of COVID-19, itโ€™s a historic opportunity to look at the facts of the world as it is โ€“ and to then focus on the solutions to some of our greatest problems. In the 75 years since the United Nations was founded, the human race has never had to face a set of challenges like we do right now. But together we can overcome them.โ€Thandie Newton OBE, womenโ€™s rights activist

โ€œMy message right now is to young people. We are living in a world where things are not the way we want; we are getting a system, we are getting a world which is unequal, which is sexist, which is racist. We have systems which are discriminating against people, our climate or environment is at risk. There is so much that needs to be done but I hope that young people stand up, raise their voices, they start their activism right now.โ€Malala Yousafzai, education advocate and UN Messenger of Peace

In the midst of a pandemic radically transforming our world, โ€œNations United โ€“ Urgent Solutions for Urgent Timesโ€ is set apart from other stories in its focus on facts and solutions, recognizing the need for specific evidence-based action, including initiatives such as paystub transparency, which will create real change. From debt relief, to cutting fossil fuel subsidies, to universal access to healthcare, quality education and digital financial empowerment โ€“ the broadcast will present the decisive and immediate action needed to build a better world.

Every day, a sea of decisions stretches before us. Some are small and unimportant, but others have a larger impact on our lives. For example, which politician should I vote for? Should I try the latest diet craze? Or will email make me a millionaire? Weโ€™re bombarded with so many decisions that itโ€™s impossible to make a perfect choice every time. But there are many ways to improve our chances, and one particularly effective technique is critical thinking. This is a way of approaching a question that allows us to carefully deconstruct a situation, reveal its hidden issues, such as bias and manipulation, and make the best decision. If the critical part sounds negative thatโ€™s because in a way it is. Rather than choosing an answer because it feels right, a person who uses critical thinking subjects all available options to scrutiny and skepticism. Using the tools at their disposal, theyโ€™ll eliminate everything but the most useful and reliable information. There are many different ways of approaching critical thinking, but hereโ€™s one five-step process that may help you solve any number of problems.

One: formulate your question. In other words, know what youโ€™re looking for. This isnโ€™t always as straightforward as it sounds. For example, if youโ€™re deciding whether to try out the newest diet craze, your reasons for doing so may be obscured by other factors, like claims that youโ€™ll see results in just two weeks. But if you approach the situation with a clear view of what youโ€™re actually trying to accomplish by dieting, whether thatโ€™s weight loss, better nutrition, or having more energy, thatโ€™ll equip you to sift through this information critically, find what youโ€™re looking for, and decide whether the new fad really suits your needs.

Two: gather your information. Thereโ€™s lots of it out there, so having a clear idea of your question will help you determine whatโ€™s relevant. If youโ€™re trying to decide on a diet to improve your nutrition, you may ask an expert for their advice, or seek other peopleโ€™s testimonies. Information gathering helps you weigh different options, moving you closer to a decision that meets your goal.

Three: apply the information, something you do by asking critical questions. Facing a decision, ask yourself, โ€œWhat concepts are at work?โ€ โ€œWhat assumptions exist?โ€ โ€œIs my interpretation of the information logically sound?โ€ For example, in an email that promises you millions, you should consider, โ€œWhat is shaping my approach to this situation?โ€ โ€œDo I assume the sender is telling the truth?โ€ โ€œBased on the evidence, is it logical to assume Iโ€™ll win any money?โ€

Four: consider the implications. Imagine itโ€™s election time, and youโ€™ve selected a political candidate based on their promise to make it cheaper for drivers to fill up on gas. At first glance, that seems great. But what about the long-term environmental effects? If gasoline use is less restricted by cost, this could also cause a huge surge in air pollution, an unintended consequence thatโ€™s important to think about.

Five: explore other points of view. Ask yourself why so many people are drawn to the policies of the opposing political candidate. Even if you disagree with everything that candidate says, exploring the full spectrum of viewpoints might explain why some policies that donโ€™t seem valid to you appeal to others. This will allow you to explore alternatives, evaluate your own choices, and ultimately help you make more informed decisions.

This five-step process is just one tool, and it certainly wonโ€™t eradicate difficult decisions from our lives. But it can help us increase the number of positive choices we make. Critical thinking can give us the tools to sift through a sea of information and find what weโ€™re looking for. And if enough of us use it, it has the power to make the world a more reasonable place.

    We Modern Humans

  • A place to feel safe

    A place to feel safe

WE Modern Humans have in common that we all need a place where we feel safe. A place to feel at home, to relax and to feel human. A home provides a collection of basic needs.

Weย Modern Humansย have a few basic needs,ย physicallyย as well as mentally. These needs are reflected in the place where you live or reside and depend on where you are on this earth. Not everybody has access to a bathroom, but still we all have the need to feel clean. A home is often multifunctional, due to the many tasks a human sapiens has to do. All domestic activities take place on a relatively small surface. Itโ€™s incredibly soft and comfortable, making it perfect for lounging around the house or running errands.

    To feel safe
Most of all, a home is a place where one can find shelter. A place where our bodies can be protected from wind, sun and cold weather. As a start this can be quite primitive. A simple roof and a soft spot to rest and sleep are enough for the first few days.

But soon you will notice that providing for a few other needs around your home would come in handy as well. Take for example access toย water and food. Also your sleeping spot could be better, instead of on the ground it could be raised to prevent moisture and little animals from entering. These things should be improved, a bad nightโ€™s sleep drains your energy. This is how homo sapiens shapes his home, bit by bit he improves his situation.

    A place to retreat
We Modern Humans need a place to relax and unwind. A place to think over, a moment to meditate and process emotions.

    Sanitary
Humans have the need to feel clean and fresh. Although hygiene is not necessarily our number one priority, Modern Humans always searched for a spot to wash and relieve himself.

    Cooking facilities
The possibility to cook is important to us. The prepared food does not necessarily need to be warm. Some people donโ€™t have the opportunity to eat anything but raw food. Either way, the preparation will be in or nearby oneโ€™s home. Globally most people eat warm food. Therefore fire is a minimal need.

    A spot to eat
Once our food is prepared we seek a spot to sit down and enjoy our food. This is often a moment of ease and to spend time with our family or roommate.

    Heating and cooling
People always wish to be in a comfortable temperature.ย Depending on the location of residence, most homes are equipped with a heater or an air conditioner.

    Possessions
People often store reserves in or around their home. This can be food but also other possessions. Generally we store more stuff than actually needed and we need enough storage space to do so.

    Roof
A roof above his head is one of the primary needs a human has. A roof keeps warmth or coolness from escaping the residence and it protects all thatโ€™s inside against rain, wind and sun.

    Windows and doors
Humans feel the need to close their home to protect their possessions. But there is also the need to let light in and to air the place. Because of this most homes are equipped with windows and a door.

    What does that mean?
It is logical and useful to meet your needs in or nearby your home. Though not everyone is capable of doing so.

    Imagine
A world where everybody can meet his needs in or around his own home. Not everyone has the possibility to create and order his surroundings in such an effective way. It would have quite an impact on the world if all humans would be able to do so.

    How can you improve yourself?
Be aware that you can save a lot of time, hassle and energy in a well organized home. Make an inventory of whatโ€™s lacking in and around your home and think about how to improve this.

  • Freedom

    Freedom

WE Modern Humans constantly strive to experience freedom. This need is present all over the world, no matter how much freedom or how many restrictions there are at a certain place.

Here we come across an essential question: does human Liberty exist and if so, what is it exactly?

    Freedom definition
To define freedom: basically, people long for the Liberty to be able to do what they want and the freedom of speech. There is also the need not to be alone and this brings us to a paradox. As soon as there is more than one person, we will have to adjust our social level and relinquish a certain Free will.

This applies mainly when a hierarchy prevails or arises. Freedom is usually seen as the privilege to do what one wants and to not do what one doesnโ€™t want to. These same privileges would be applicable to others and can be on a physical as well as on a spiritual level. Besides this, persons should be allowed to disembosom.

However, there will always be limitations. This can be because of certain legislations or restrictions in, for example, what you can and may say publically. Some parts of the world are โ€˜freeโ€™, as in that they do not belong to the territory of a state, such as the open sea. But there, the โ€œUnited Nations Convention on the Law of the Seaโ€ is applicable.

As you see, you will never be completely free as a modern human being.

Wherever in the world you are, if you have duties you also have rights. The Free will humans have is described in the rights of human.

    Human rights
All over the world, Liberty is a central concept in human rights. Free will is described in a large number of meanings and connections. For example, terms such as โ€œfreedom toโ€ and โ€œfreedom (or indemnity) ofโ€ are used.

It speaks of personal, intellectual, political and academic freedom. The rights of Free will include freedom of conscience, religion, expression and freedom of speech. One is free in choice of faith, parenting style (parental power), work, life partner, etc. Also natural or commercial Liberty areย discussed, as well as theย adoption of autonomy.

As you can read, freedom plays a big role in human rights. You could say that the main goal of human rights is to guarantee this Liberty that we long for to the fullest extent possible.

    Freedom and limitations
As described above, apart from your rights to Liberty, you also have obligations or, in this case, limitations. Examples of this:
โ€ข In the freedom of speech it is not permitted to call for hatred or violence (the prohibition of hate speech).
โ€ข In the Free will of movement, a state may determine whether or not someone is allowed to enter its territory.
โ€ข In the freedom of religion, the government may limit the choice for the place of worship, for the clothing that is worn as a religious expression and the way in which children are raised within a certain faith.
โ€ข In the freedom of dealing with oneโ€™s own body (medicine use, drugs, tattoo, mutilation, etc.), a government may intervene if the individualย cannot be held accountable.
โ€ข In the Free will of expression, such as art in public places, the government may set limits to preserve public order and morality.

Below you will find the link to Human Rights in various language areas:
Human rights in all available languages.

    What does that mean?
In general we can say that freedom stops at the border of another. Unfortunately, this border can also be a cause for conflicts.

    Imagine
A world where everyone can be free in his actions while showing respect to another. A world where someone can determine and set his own limits.

    How can you improve yourself?
As soon as you do not feel free, try to find out where this feeling is coming from. Is it just a feeling or is it a legal or social demarcation? If you cannot live with it, see if there is a place where you can escape this demarcation.
Generally: imagine how others feel and set limits for yourself. Respect this limit, after all it was your own free choice to set this limit. Be aware which of your personal limits others should not cross and communicate this with the people around you, so they know which limits you have.

    We Modern Humans

  • Respect

    Respect

WE Modern Humans want to be treated with respect. From a social point of view, we then also should respect and treat others in the same way.

    Respect definition
To define respect: regard, esteem coming from a sense of loyalty, appreciation or admiration based on the high value we give another. We have or receive respect due to qualities, performances or skills. When you respect someone, you keep in mind what the other person does or what kind of person he is. It also means: the polite treatment or sparing / saving the other person.

    Raise of status
Showing the other respect or reverence increases the other oneโ€™s status. Respect is a condition as well as a reciprocity.
The condition: I treat the other with respect if he treats me with respect.
The reciprocity: if someone treats me with respect, I will respect him in return.

When our status is being raised by another person, we will answer this by raising the status of this person as well. Raising somebody elseโ€™s status or to reduce the status of oneself fits in a long-term vision. The willingness to raise another personโ€™s status will pay off in due time. Our status will be raised in return. At least, thatโ€™s what one will expect.

    Respect and incomprehension
When showing respect or raising the otherโ€™s status, there can be a problem. There is no general rule that says how to do it. When one intents to be raising someoneโ€™s status, it does not necessarily also have to come across like this. And what one expects when being respected, does not have to be the same as what the other thinks he should do or say when intending to show respect. The pattern of expectations when it comes to status, perception and the actual experience provide sufficient room for misunderstandings between people. It can happen that someone does not feel fully respected, while the other person is convinced to have acted with respect.

    Pay me some respect
Cultures and subcultures in the broadest sense of the word have enormous differences in expectation patterns and the actual behavior when wanting to show respect. For example, the elderly often say that โ€œthe young have no respect for the elderlyโ€. But young people generally do show their respect, itโ€™s just that they do this in a different way than the elderly expect or hope for. Conversely, young people also do not always feel treated with respect. They call this the generation gap.

    What does that mean?
Respect is both cultural and personal. Yet every person needs to receive respect and is prepared to show others respect as well. This in connection with the possible return of a raise in status.

    Imagine
A world where everyone treats each other and themselves with respect. A world where everybody shows mutual understanding and where people value each other.

    How can you improve yourself?
Of course, every person is responsible for his own behavior. The only way to prevent problems is to explicitly discuss what is seen as a problem. Listen to each other and share expectations. To show understanding, if necessary with a slight reduction of oneโ€™s own status, can clear up a lot.
